My other monitor is 1920 x 1200, and anything fluid on that just doesn't work.

And trying to read text in 100% main content area with no columns is not easy. This is why flexible 100% is not always a good idea. If 20% of my site visitors were using 800x600 I would not even be considering alienating them?
This is a subject that gets discussed regularly but the bottom line is that an 800x600 will display in an acceptable way for everyone. The same cannot be said for other widths.
