Hello Everyone

I am little confused about the role of hosting server in website speed. My website takes a long time to download. My site is hosted on a shared server and it also uses database. Can any one tell me what could be the possible problems in hosting server if a website speed is very slow?

Load speed can be affected by many factors. The first thing I would look at is page size. Next I would look to see if other sites load slow on your connection. Call your provider and ask them if that server has any issues like DOS attacks or high CPU usage. It could just be you. Run some tests. Create some small pages that pull a small amount from the database. If all those test give you fast load times and your site is still slow it may be your site design. A poorly designed site can cause your connection to be slow. You can also find sites that are on the same server as you and see how slow they load.

Hi Oglitree

I had conducted a test by creating a text only page (no image, no script) and uploading it on the server. When i call that page even it took more than 5 sec to load. Other sites are loading quite nicely, so there couldn't be the problem with my connection.

My host says that no one else is having such problem. But i am unable to load a text only page in good time. So i presume that there is some problem with my hosting server. So I want to know what could be the problems with hosting server side when a site load slowly? Should i consider moving to a VPS or dedicated server?

This is not rocket science.

If you have in the shared server a 10 Mb/s card network and 50 pages (with 15 images each one) from 50 different sites are downloading simultaneously, the card starts sending some pages and put the others in the queue.

Most shared servers have between 50 and 200 websites. Go figure.

My host says that no one else is having such problem.

Them all will say they have they have the quickest network "beyond El Paso" and them all will blame the ISP because we all know the whole network is out of our control or measure.

Thanks Lexur

It means that I should move to VPS or Dedicated Server. I think this is the only solution to this problem.

A dedicated server? I have several site running on shared servers and they all work fine as far as download speed is concerned. One site has roughly 6000 uniques a day and absolutely all of the pages loaded have more than 2 pictures on them. If it's not your particular connection then it it probably is your ISP. There is a huge difference in ISPs and the more you pay the better they are (as a general rule). Pay $20 a month and you will get a good one if you ask round for recommendations.
