301 redirect question

I have a friend that did a 301 redirect from site A to site B about one year ago. Now he wants to do a 301 redirect to a site C.
Is it better to do the 301 from site A to C, and take site B down, or do the 301 from A to B and B to C?

All redirected pages are being recreated on site C. They were originally recreated on site B.

The reason for the switch has to do with a friendlier domain name.

I would go from B to C, but update your A to B to now go A to C as well. I would think that after one year the 301 traffic from A to B has been handled though. You could always grep your access logs on site A to be sure.
