PDFs made with CutePDF getting mangled in Macs

I have PDFs on my site that I've made with CutePDF (also some with PDF995). When my Mac users open them with Preview/Safari, they are corrupted with undreadable characters. When the same Mac users then use Adobe PDF reader, they're fine.

what is likely to be causing this? Is it a font embedding issue or something else?

What do other webmasters use to make PDF's readable across multiple platforms without these issues?

I've had similar issues the other way around. A PDF containing equations that I print to PDF using my Mac is garbled on windows.

The best PDF solution I've found on Windows is to install the adobe postscript printer driver and 'postscript print to pdf'. I used to use this to print out Mathematica stuff and it worked well (much better than the full version of Adobe ... the files produced with that were garbled). See:
