New Designer used Joomla. Am I in trouble?

What is your experience with joomla from an SEO perspective?

Hey Everyone,

I'm having a site designed and didn't have much to spend. I found a designer to help me out. I just found out (after the site is almost done) that the site is built using Joomla.... After doing some reading I'm starting to get worried. So a few questions for you pro's out there

1. Is Joomla search engine friendly?
2. I read that Joomla's code is very messy and can make it hard on the SE's.
3. Does Joomla create funky URL's? Meaning is it going to be www.mysite.com/services or will it be www.mysite/23l?jpID=2343
4. Am I screwed?

Hi Leadclick

Joomla can be optimised. There are plug-ins for the software that allow SE friendly URL's, for example.

Joomla, like most tools, is only as good as the person using it. If the site has been designed with SEO in mind you should have no problem.

The code from most CMS's is a bit sloppy out of the box. They all need tweaking. Some more than others. Take a look under the hood and see if you can see semantic markup, appropriate meta and doctype, clean code...

I think the responsibility should be shifted toward your designer, not the software.

Thank you for the Reply. What you are saying makes perfect sense. I spoke with my designer this morning and he said the exact same things you did. Sounds like he can make the URL strings very SE friendly as well as clean the code up.

Thanks so much!

Joomla can be great from an SEO standpoint. You received great advice. If you know what you are doing with Joomla it's good. If not it can be bad : )

I have built several sites using Joomla that do just fine in the SE's, and that validate to W3C standards. I wouldn't worry "if" your designer knows what they are doing.
