Appropriate for commercial listing?

I have been told that maintaining a link to your website in wikipedia is a losing battle.

However I noticed that wikipedia has a "list of companies" section. This section contains large and small companies.

To avoid self promotion, I am planning on listing the top 5 or 10 companies in my niche market (with us being in the top 5 (honest we really are).

This way, if things go well, we all benefit, and if things go terribly wrong, then we are all brought down a notch (however i believe this is just paranoia).

I figure, if Wikipedia has a list of companies section, well then its an open invitation for a factual non-promotional listing for my company.

Any Comments?

If your company is suitably notable, and satisfies the Wikipedia criteria for notability then a corporate listing is entirely possible. If not, they're going to argue that Wikipedia is not a directory. You have to prove why your company's page deserves a spot.

I also noticed that the companies directory history log has very few deletions, which is a good sign, indicating that it is a backwater directory with little management.

Also, by listing several sites, there will be safety in numbers. Its one thing to nuke one site, but when there is a fair bit of content (several sites), people will think twice before deleting the entire shooting match.

Wikipedia crieteria for notability is rather subjective anyways.
