i am just about to leave my current employment and start up on my own.

i have decided to set up a competition / free stuff site where vistors will register and answer questions in order to enter competitons etc..

i need to start bringing in revenue fast, what would anybody think is the best/fastest way to start getting visitors

i have reasonalbe experience in seo but that will obviously take some time, so i am just looking for a jump start

i have some money, i had been looking at the banner impression but having never used them wondered if they were any good

No such thing as get-rich schemes.

You'd be much better off developing your site first and then jumping ship with your employer AFTER you've reached a sustainable income from it.

About the only way to get a lot of traffic quickly is to buy it.

Google AdWords, Yahoo/Overture, MSN, and dozens of 2nd & 3rd tier networks. Search for pay-per-click advertising.

the best/fastest way to start getting visitors

A national, peak-time, TV advert. No I am not being flippant, this is the most effective form of advertising.

Working down from here, in terms of cost and effectiveness, you have radio, newspaper, magazines, Internet agencies (such as Valuclick and Casale Media), Google's Adwords system - which is very poor, and just below it in terms of effectiveness, free banner exchange programs.

Bear in mind, the effectiveness of the advertising will be directly related to the cost, don't expect millions of visitors in response to spending $50 on a Google Adwords campaign!

I will only add one point.

The basics of a web site, search engines, and the Internet in general is content. If you have something people will need, if your content is rich, the search engines will place you high in their results and visitors will come.

"My hero" is a friend who worked answering the tech support lines of the ISP where I used to work. He started a site, on a technical topic that was of vital importance to gamers and networking in general. No advertising, no black hat, just built the content.

Six months later has was making so much money he was able to quit his mimimum wage job, buy a new car and house- CASH - and two years later it's still rolling in. I consider six months "get rich quick." But it's not a pushbutton thing, he worked hard on it every day, and still is.

So if your idea is strong, you know what you're talking about, just build it well and they will come.

So how did he start making money? Google Adsense, memberships, PPC?

If its a good system get on your thinking cap and make some Viral adds that would get passed around the internet make some funny images up, chain mail, you tube videos and all that Jazz.

Something that people will go... wow "coolness" Jimmy here go look at that website I like it!

So how did he start making money?

His content is all free, static pages. AdSense, I think, is the majority of his income, but lately has been approached by a lot of large companies for advertising. He has even been contacted by the big M.S. :-)
