What do you call yourself? (Job Description)

I am curious to know how people refer to themselves when they speak with people who aren't technically inclined. I suppose that webmaster, seoer, domainer, etc... are the most accurate titles, but I find myself having to explain entire industries, when I speak with many people.

I remember growing up, I had no idea what my father did, because he was a medicare reimbursement consultant, and if you don't work in the industry, it is really meaningless.

When asled. what do you tell people that you do?

I just tell people I fool around with computers. It's vague and leaves a huge amount to the inquirer's imagination but that's how I like it.

I dont work with computers and I still avoid having to tell people what I do exactly, man they always ask what is exactly is it teh job I do.

Its so varied I an explanation would take a while, so I just say I work in the public sector and try and walk off.

^ ^ Same here. :-) I just get tired of the glazed look I get when I actually do try to explain, it's insulting when they respond with "in English please, ha ha ha" like they're making a really good joke.

Like jessejump says, "I do websites, go to example.com, I did that."

For someone genuinely interested, web developer, programmer, designer, Internet marketer, and all-around Internet problem solver. At which point I usually get "yeah, my cousin does that, you should go to myamateursite.com, he's really great."

Or if it's someone that really gets under my skin, I point them to one of my first ugly, horrible zero-budget three-page sites. Buh bye! :-)

I say I'm a freelance web developer. If they ask what that means, I say "I make web sites." And as mentioned above, they say their girlfriend or mother or brother does that too. Which is the way it seems these days.

I was nearly out of college when the WWW started. Now you can take web design electives and even major in it. I can't get used to being a dime a dozen. What to do...
