Three or Fourth level domain name?

I'm working with two companies that just merged into one.

They used to have to separate domains:

www.a.com
www.b.com

They now have:

www.a.b.com

Four level domains aren't too popular, so I'm wondering if there is going to be a problem with this. Is there any real different, from an SEs perspective, to a.b.com and www.a.b.com?

It doesn't matter to SEs in the slightest - but convention says www.a.com, www.b.com but a.b.com - no www

Ultimately, the choice is yours, but whatever you choose, stick to it 100%, and 301 from www.a.com and www.b.com to whatever you choose.

And 301 from the one you didn't choose to the one you did choose.

If they are going to maintain the brand, why confuse things by using a subdomain? Keep the original site.

But if you have no choice, be kind to your user's fingers and drop the www.

www is an anachronism. I wish webmasters would stop, already! It serves NO purpose. Do a 301 redirect so that you don't lose users that insist on typing-in "www".

Also consider ab.com if domain available

I've been saying that for years, but nobody seems to get it. ;) When will they learn?

Thanks for the help. They do have ab.com already, but the marketing folks are insisting on a.b.com. I think we're going to drop the www part though. *fingers crossed*
