I have heard that due to the subdomains, domain gets advantage, is it true? What would be the reason for getting an advantage and what kind of?

One of my friends is telling me that if you optimize your subdomain then the main domain will also get the benefit. But if a subdomain is negatively optimized then it wont affect the ranking of the main domain. Is it true? And up to what extant?

Domains affects the subdomains or vice-versa?

I suspect you have been very largely misinformed.

For most SEO purposes, a subdomain is treated exactly like any other separate domain, so there would be no specific benefits between the main and the sub.

In fact, the content of the main domain would likely get much more benefit from the extra content being placed on the sam site; and that content would get a better boost too.

There are also other benefits; the need to promote one site, not two. Plus reduced visitor confusion with one base URL, not two.

Never forget Quadrille's Oft-Quoted Seventh Law: Divide your site and be conquered.
