Can anyone recommend a tool (free or low cost) that will crawl my website and make html files of the entire website? The website is an ASP based one.
The copy will be used for offline surfing, creating search indexes and planning and re designing issues

I have used a tool called Site Import from webassist.com I think they are on version 2 now. It is an extension that installs in Dreamweaver and if you type in a URL it will go out and copy the entire site however many levels deep you want into DW and re-create the entire site.

I think it works great. I have used it many times including a time where a crazy freelance webmaster was holding my client's site hostage. I simply went in and used this tool to make a perfect duplicate of the site.

I think it will work on .asp and databases as well, but you should read the specs first.

depending on your precise requirements you could also use blackwidow ..but as jtara says httrack is the best general purpose app for this ..and it's free

I was doing some analysis of a site, so I used winhttrack...which is free,
- downloaded a whole site,
- opened up dreamweaver
- created a new site in the site editing tool
- began disecting the downloaded site

Easy and free
