Hi there,

I'm a relatively inexperienced web developer and am designing a site for a musician. There are numerous music files on the site which need to be played, but aren't able to be downloaded.

It is a static html site and up until now I've just embedded the file into a seperate popup page, which opens a relevant media player to play the mp3 file, although you can quite easily find the mp3 file by viewing the souce of the page or the properties of the file.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening? Even if it is obvious, it would be greatly appreciated.

There are many schemes to protect audio content - the simplest one is to prevent most folks from saving it is to encode it in a proprietary format, like Flash Audio.

That said - if it can be played - it can be copied. There's no real way around that.

Audio can easily be captured and recorded through the sound card, so whether it can be 'downloaded' is of little relevance. It's not worth trying to stop.

put up partial songs if you don't want the stuff downloaded, launch the mp3s using m3u text files, which adds one more step to get the download url, but if you don't want it taken, don't put it up online.

i think i read this differently ... you want to play the mp3 in the same page ... right?
if so there are a couple of options.... fit the player in an iframe within a div instead of using the popup ...
or use a java applet to play the mp3 ... not too hard ... i think there are a coiuple available, but you can splice one together with the java 2 1.3 spi
