I have many images on my sites that I would like to be indexed by Google and the other search engines - I have added the ALT text but they are still not getting picked up. Any suggestions?

You could make sure that the Google Image Bot is specified in your 'robots.txt' file. The code is below:
User-agent: GoogleBot-Image Disallow:
This will make certain that you have granted access to the Google Image Bot.
