Embedded Youtube Videos now default to 240p

Video quality is horrible compared to 360p

Within the last week, there have been reports and I can confirm that most of the embedded youtube videos on websites have fallen back to a default of 240p instead of the 360p that it had been at. The quality drop is dramatic. Videos now look pixelated, blocky, and low quality, even if the orginal is HD. There is no way to change this default on the embedded video. I have tried all the old ways, and nothing works. Anyone else notice this? Is this a new youtube policy or a big error?

I have been uploading 1-2 videos a day to YouTube for the past month, all of them are still defaulting to 360. I have not heard of any changes to YouTube's policy.

Which code are you using(old/new)? Iframe still has 360 as default for me.

Excuse my ignorance, I'm not a YouTube user, what does the "p" (240p) represent? Pixels?

Standard video nomenclature, "p" stands for progressive. A 240p video consists of frames 240 pixels high displayed at the frame rate. The alternative would be 240i where "i" stands for interlaced and the video consists of 240 pixel high frames each divided into two 120 pixel high fields with one field containing the even numbered lines of pixels and the other the odd. The fields are displayed sequentially at twice the frame rate with the display of each field leaving the spaces for the pixels from the other field vacant. Interlaced is an old analog TV thing and today's HD TV and computer video are usually progressive display.

is indeed true ..in Youtube "p" means "pixels" , hence the "quality" on Youtube goes from 720p HD through 480p to 360p to 240p ..and on certain items 1080p HD*

*Often referred to as "True HD"..or "Full HD"..

<= Old enough to remember progressive 405 and later 625 lines TV ( even still have some ) and the Woodentops, Bill and Ben etc in black and white..
