Formatting Video for i-devices

best practices?

I'm thinking of adding a format that is optimized for IPhone and/or IPad, but I don't want to do both.

What are the best practices for video dimensions here? Should I make an IPad optimized video and let the IPhone automatically downscale it? Or make an IPhone video and let the IPad upscale it? I'm already providing 720x480 videos for download/HD streaming.

I would go with a larger iPad version as videos tend to look better when downsized then when they are expanded to fit a larger medium.

Think of it like a low-rez image on your site, making it larger by just enlarging the dimensions will look bad, but making it smaller will hardly be noticeable.

@travelin cat: Thanks, I think I will do that. I was also thinking that ITunes offers the same size for all players. Plus and HD size for TVs.
