There are ways to spread the load - hosting on YouTube has been mentioned as one method, and there are media storage and caching services that can be used to keep bandwidth charges under control.

I once made a video that became popular and quickly ate my monthly bandwidth allowance. I used CoralCDN to offload the distribution, and I know that Amazon also offers a service to do this.
