X is running a test in New Zealand and the Philippines where it'll charge new users $1 per year to prove they are not a bot.

The subscription, part of a so-called “Not A Bot” program, is beginning in those two countries and is designed to “bolster our already significant efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity,” X said

I'm a bit puzzled by the “per year” part. Do they envision a scenario where someone might start out human, and turn into a robot later, so they need to be re-checked periodically?

The crazy thing is, this will probably catch on and I wouldn't be surprised if Facebook, LinkedIn end up copying this scheme.

A lot of people's businesses is directly tied to Twitter, a lot of these OnlyFans people especially.

I'm puzzled, too. I would guess a bot won't have a form of payment, and many bots could cost a scammer quite a lot of money.


I suspect he's looking at any way to raise funds.

the dollar per year subscription is simply a form of friction aimed at bots (without regard to its effect on humans)
