In a discussion about AI, Elon Musk talked about a way to stop the bots, and the idea was that everyone should pay to use X Twitter, effectively putting it behind a paywall.
Somehow, I don't think that's a good idea at all, imho.

He probably is thinking, if some people are paying for the blue tick, why not make everyone pay something and prove they are not bots.

I don't think I will pay, for me it will be bye bye X :)

I wonder who is advising him: Probably nobody.

It's an expensive oil tanker collision that's been happening in slow motion in front of us.

i actually think it a good idea.

bots are going to be a bigger and bigger problem on all social media - making a 'user' pay is one way of cutting them back, although it wouldn't eradicate them. as i suspect some bot networks, both potitical and commercial, which push either products or agendas are extremely well funded.

perhaps a free to read but must be a paying member to actually post or reply is a sensible variation.

my personal experience is that twitter has improved under musk, i know not everyone agrees.

as people are becoming more detatched from money due to the decline in cash and increase in contactless and similar types of payments, i believe they are less aware of their personal budgets and spending and thus they are more willing to take on subscriptions like this.

It could depend on the level of the charge. If it is just $1 pcm to prove you are a human, I probably wouldn't mind.

However $8 - 10 pcm would be another issue.

I already don't buy/use Adobe Photoshop because of such a subscription.

There's going to be a huge number of people that won't pay at all, and it's not right that failed bot-blocking should be paid for by users, imho. Get a grip, Musk, use technology to solve that problem!

If, as has been suggested, he's looking at a way to raise revenue, there are many other ways to do that.

The fewer "people" using the system negates its true value to other users.

Musk should get back to the core advantage of twitter which was (almost a service) to give real-time communications and enable discussion.

engine don't you think the massed exodus of everyone "left of centre" after Musk took over means Twitter X won't be able to recover to those earlier days?

I agree Mark_A that it may already be the case, especially with the fairly lame attempt by Meta, and the other similar offerings appearing to want to take traffic: It's all become very fragmented, which kind of defeats the object of a global network.
He could pull it back, but I suspect he won't, coupled with can't.

90% takers, 10% doers.... pretty much human history since the beginning.

That said, X behind a paywall better be nifty keen!
