Twitter Tests Tweet Author Controls Limiting Conversation and Replies

Twitter is testing a new author controls feature where a tweet's author can choose who can reply, such as only people you follow, , only people you mention, or the default of everyone. Tweets with the filtered options will have reply greyed out, but the message can be read, retweeted with or without a comment, and liked.
The test is limited, but a global test on iOS and Android.

No, it doesn't prevent comments. It allows a conversation of a group the user chooses. People can still comment, but not in the same thread.
It could create better quality conversations, and avoid the comments that don't contribute value to a conversation.

It would be more interesting if the segmented tweets would only be viewable to that specific segment (e.g. followers or mentioned users). The way it sounds now... I have to agree with tangor.
