Supplementing the "while you were away" this new option on twitter appears to put tweets most likes and those accounts you interact with most at the top of the timeline. Users can test it now by going to timeline settings and selecting 'Show me the best Tweets first'. The option will be turned on over the coming weeks.
You flip on the feature in your settings; then when you open Twitter after being away for a while, the Tweets you're most likely to care about will appear at the top of your timeline – still recent and in reverse chronological order. The rest of the Tweets will be displayed right underneath, also in reverse chronological order, as always. At any point, just pull-to-refresh to see all new Tweets at the top in the live, up-to-the-second experience you already know and love. Jeff Seibert, Twitter’s head of consumer product said,
The “best” tweets will be selected based on factors such as the accounts a user most often interacts with, the types of tweets a user engages with, a user’s interests and what is buzzing within their network of Twitter accounts. During tests, about “a dozen or so” tweets were typically shown, Mr. Seibert said.
But don’t worry, hardcore users. Mr. Seibert says this isn’t a reordering of the timeline into an algorithmic feed, as Buzzfeed reported last week. Twitter's New Timeline Inserts "Best Tweets First" Option [blogs.wsj.com]
