Hi I have a small following for my site on twitter.

Usually get about 4-5 followers everyday

Just since a day before new followers are coming in every couple of minutes or so!

I've no clue where these new followers are coming from. What could be the reason for this flood of followers as I'm not advertising or marketing the Twitter account. Kindly suggest what could be the reason for this spurt

Take a look at the accounts to see if they are worthwhile, or worthless. It could simply be spammers following legitimate accounts to make their profile look good.

So spammers make hundreds of accounts on twitter? Isn't that tough to do?

Yes, the spammers create many, many accounts to expose their content.

Just look at any of the accounts and look at their profiles, and their tweets. Don't click any of the links in their content as it may have an unwelcome payload in there somewhere.

Yeah most of the accounts are new users with legit names some making their first tweets and following popular Twitter accounts .

Could it be that Twitter put my account into list of recommended accts? The accounts seem legit to me

If the spammers are following each-other, what happens is they will see recommended accounts to follow, and that often includes other accounts that the other spammer has followed. One thing leads to another.

I don't think those accounts are legitimate when you see them appear in bulk like that unless there was a cause. I too have been recently deluged with New Follower Requests with no cause. Since I'm in Protected Mode on Twitter, New Followers have to request to follow me. I then review and approve or disapprove. If I see that they are crap accounts, I'll block and report them to Twitter. It's one of those "feels good" exercises. In one day this past week, I think I received 50+ requests, that's about 49 too many.

In the past, I've seen Twitter automagically cleanup this type of stuff. Followers appear and disappear all the time. Twitter is constantly performing updates and trying to keep some level of sanity. I don't think I would ever come out of Protected Mode, not knowing what is out there. You have to understand what happens in that entire Follow process when you're not protected. It's one BIG orgy out there with all sorts of STDs (Socially Transmitted Diseases).

Yeah - almost 45% twitter accounts are fake. Mods are fighting with this fact but when they found one spam account, 10 more was just added. There is no efficient way to get rid of spammers.
