I've been trying to get onto Twitter this morning (east coast: USA) and have had no success. Any scuttlebutt on what might be happening?

Yep. 300 million Arabs and mass revolution across the Middle East - no problem. 3 million Irish voters and a General/National Election - bang. :) Most of the election results are being followed on Twitter and the national broadcasters are/were also using it.
