I noticed, on a particular search term, that the spammers are working hard. Either foks accounts have been compromised, or the account sign-ups are getting out of hand.

It is easy to hack/edit OAuth.

As an aside, I created a new twitter account, published the same message 30 times in 5 minutes (message contained 2 links to nacional newspaper sites), it got pinked straight away.
They are getting better at spotting spam accounts.

There was a huge surge yesterday, however, today, twitter seems to have blocked it. There were hundreds of accounts spamming thousands of messages. It was a mess.
