Just a quick question. If I optimize a site for the term ‘some yellow thing’, will it also automatically be optimized for ‘yellow thing’ since that’s part of the other sentence?

If your optimising your site and using 'some yellow thing' as your primary keywords, you will also - to some extent - be optimised for:
and permutations of these.
Today's search engines are 'clever' enough to make the link between these keywords.
You should also think of using variations of these in your copy to further strengthen your positions for them.
