Moving a site to a different host

will this hurt rankings?

I have a potential client that wants to host with my company that has been told by it's existing host that if he moves his site he will lose his rankings. I haven't ever heard of this being true, but at the same time, I don't get asked this question very often. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Thanks

No problem at all!

Have a look at this article:

It is potentially true.

I have read that if you offer shared hosting and another customer of yours is blacklisted, this can affect all customers with the same shared IP address.

If each customer has their own IP address, I don't think it will matter then.

Just redirect 301

Don't do a 301 - that will affect your rankings. But you wouldn't do that because you're talking about moving hosts, not changing domains. Just change the DNS settings and you should be fine provided you're not going to a shared hosting setting with a bunch of spammers...
