Got an odd request for one page and one page only. The user agent and IP seem legit-
UA: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)
IP : 66.249.65.147

but the referer was:
http://www.lotsasites.com/topic?topic=folk;id=407;prvw;w=_w

lotsasites.com redirects to webring.org

What do you make of this?

What do you make of this?

I make it weird and anomalous, and I'd like to hear what other people find. You probably know that it's fairly common for the Googlebot to send a referer when requesting supporting files, especially scripts and stylesheets. But

:: detour to check own archived logs ::

I can't find any-- zero-- cases of the genuine Googlebot sending a referer with page requests. (I thought I'd got one, but that was DomainTools, which lives elsewhere in 66.249. Not sure what they were doing with the Googlebot UA.) Other than that, the combination {page request + referer + Googlebot UA} yields nothing but Russian referer spam.

Could it be running from a local site search? No idea, though, since I pay little attention to G's foibles.
