Client wants to replicate their site on multiple subdomains

Hi All,

I have question that I feel is somewhat bad seo practice and wanted some clarity. i have client who is about to launch 15 new brands over the coming year.

The main site structure is going to be brand.holdingcompany.co.za. They are in a publishing group and have access to about 80 news sites across the country. They want to replicate the main site being brand.holdingcompany.co.za onto each of the 80 sites being brand.newssite1.co.za

Content can be changed but the listings will all be the sale.

I have my reservations about this but they seem to be going ahead, is there any advice or way around this that you guys may have?

My thoughts were to only have listing related to area showing on the news site with unique content etc but im not really sure what to do.

Help would be appreciated.

hello gusvdw and welcome to the forums. I can only say that if they insist on carrying this out they will not be very pleased. Your thoughts are more in line with reality. To be found, a site needs to offer something, some benefit to the visitor that is not on lots of other websites. Localized results can work, but showing the same aggregated content on every site is not a benefit to the visitor.

The client insights on have all listings on the subdomain because there may be a few people who would search outside of the location (if 5 people do I think it will be a miracle). I guess data will tell a better story that they will believe.

In order to have both sides covered I have suggested that they should implement a noindex tag on all listings and results pages that are not related to the specific area. Unique content relevant to that specific location. I did want to have a link that users could click that would take them to a search page where they could perform a search if they wanted to.

I just hope they buy into the above because it will be really bad for them if it goes wrong.
