Heavy media sites that freeze browsers

am I the only one that gets furious over advertising heavy media sites that freeze browsers...?

yes...i could block the ads if I want.. But I like to see the latest trends of what people are advertising/ and doing.

It should just be against the law to have so many ads on a page...and in particular video ads.

I generally tend to try and avoid these sites since they are so goddamn awful even on a super quick PC. I know that on my Android tablets that these sites crash the browsers incessantly but, at the same time, their mobile sites normally seem to work ok.

Don't any of these developers ever try their sites at home with a normal connection.

Only the other day I had to hard reset an office machine since it totally locked-up the machine, it was completely frozen, I haven't seen that sort of thing in ages.

I'm assuming that these problems are created by feeds emanating from different sources...would that be correct?

Developers like these, unfortunately, have no clue to the limitations of the "average" user/system/device that will attempt to view the site. Would that there could be a rule that developers had to use systems and code at LEAST four years old when creating websites. (No going to happen)

Is there any wonder that adblocker and js killer add-ons remain popular?

The developers don't even get their say in situations like this. Since their 'news/media' sites...it's all about the revenue. If boss says we need you to throw another ad up there to help revenue...he has to throw another ad up there.

I just really wish Google would take these things more seriously...and severely penalize these types of media sites...regardless of how big they are. I know they already have a advertising penalty if you put too many ads on the site. But in particular these video ads, and different types of shady 'grey area' type of ads...that are semi-malware'ish....and that obviously pay better.

It's especially annoying when i'm working and i've got windows open of all kinds...and it completely freezes everything. Their almost like viruses....that annoying.

Naah. It's the same mentality that makes people design sites that demand a 2000px window, just because the designer likes looking at everything as big as possible and can't imagine anyone else having different preferences.

My gripe is not so much with the offending page as with losing any other pages you happened to have open at the same time. I don't think any of my browsers have an option for "Reopen all pages that were open at the time of the unexpected shutdown ... except the one page that caused the browser to crash". (Especially if it wasn't a full-blown crash, but just hanging for so long that you gave up and force-quit.) So you don't just lose the page that deserved to be lost. You lose a bunch of others, one of which may have been the very page you needed. I'm thinking in particular of opening a bunch of tabs for a string of search-engine results. Bad pages linked from good pages aren't as common.

This has been a beef of mine for a long time. And, I thought is was because of my old 'puter....... Cursed news site! The major social media site also causes me grief........

Another is prime sites designed only for smart (stupid) phones.......... They don't give such a good experience on a PC....... Just a bunch of boxes, instead of a sensible list of articles. My favourite motoring site has recently changed over to the latter. I think I preferred the old site, roll over pop-up ads included... LOL

I'm sure is a case of 'because I can'. I'm sure many of us started out there, I know I did. Although, fortunately, I'd long grown out of that before the Flash arrived n the scene. ;D

I encountered one recently that took over 16.6 seconds to load on a cable modem connection. Yslow score 59, Total page size: 10.4MB, Total number of requests: 632. Wow - only about 7-10x my largest pages!

One has to wonder what their bounce rate is and how little their income is from the smaller network's ads.

Things which can reduce these bad experiences [if not using solid ad-blocker] are:
Disable Flash;
Disallow animations in web pages;
Disallow sound in webpages.

I agree, this stuff which crashes other apps and pages is malware. Perhaps the anti-malware companies can come up with a blacklist--like the anti-spam blacklists ISPs use--which could be implemented via HOSTS file or background app or browser plug-in.
