What's the best tool/software to get a rough idea on competitor traffic? Both paid and unpaid software? and for both organic and paid traffic.

I'm not too sure that's what I was looking for. Something like SearchMetrics was more in line with what I was thinking.

ahrefs - the "glance report" will be useful enough for what you are looking for. If you want a dedicated research on the competition, then Semrush (paid and US only) ahrefs (paid) are good choices.
