Page vs subfolder, which is better?

Is it generally better these days to create a page dealing with a specific site content, (for example, widgets)...

as a subfolder appropriately named:
domain.com/widgets/

or as a page, appropriately named:
domain.com/widgets.html

or is there not very much difference between the two versions?

You forgot option 3:

the extensionless page (which might secretly be either of your first two)
domain.com/widgets

So that's a plain old html page without the .html extension? Is there any benefit to doing that?

In my first example I was referring to just the folder with an index.html and then the .htaccess set up to read index.html by default, so in the browser the url would just show up as the directory and you would never actually 'see' index.html in the URL...

I think that has a really miserable effect... if any..

but in my opinion the ".html" part is nothing but useless clutter

personally my view is that the shorter the better

example.com/widgets

so in the browser the url would just show up as

... what shows in the browser is what the hard coded link to the page is (unless you do a redirect).
