Expanding My Niche Website Via Sub Domians

I want to expand my website using subdomians on different topics.... help?

I am planning to expand my niche website by using sub domains.

For ex: i have website on "Blue Widgets" (www.bluewidgets.com)and i would now like to expand it (because it is already strong and has good number of links and content) by adding subdomains, like red.bluewidgets.com, yellow.bluewidgets.com

What is bothering me is that the domain name is specifically related to blue widgets and if i add subdomains with other types of widgets, it could hurt my site in terms of SEO or G would consider it irrelevant.

I am thinking and i am not sure what should be done, either do subdomains or start a new website from scratch with a new domain name etc.

I need your advice on this.

If you want to go with sub-domains as the widgets would be really related but totally different IMO best approach would be to have www.widgets.com as central domain and actual widgets as sub-domains

Ankit, what do you mean by "really related"?

Let me put it this way:

You can say if i have site related to personal injury law(this is an example, i don't have site around this area at all) - and i now i want to expand it to other areas too like family law or divorce law, would it be good to create sub-domains on the same personal injury site?
