if I get a dedicated IP, what if a spammer had that IP before?

Here is the problem with getting a dedicated IP - how do I know what the history of that IP address is, and if anyone has used that before?

And even worse, what if a spammer had used that IP address? Wouldn't it then be a liability or even higher risk to go for a dedicated IP?

I say this in term of SE effects. I know there's a great debate about dedicated vs shared IP's, but doesnt going to a dedicated IP remove 0.0% risk whatsoever, since the history of the IP address and who's used it is in the air?

And this would be different from a shared IP in what way? I mean, what if the spammer had your shared IP previously?

Moreover, I'd guess your chances of getting such an address would be on a par with getting HIV from an e-mail ... too small to measure.

BUT ... if it works out that you happen to be the one in a bazillion to hit that puppy on the head (255x255x255x255-(a few)=~2.5 bazillion), what would prevent you from asking your provider for a different address?

Just asking, is all.

good points..and yes...you're right, the situation would still apply to the shared IP as well.

But how would I go about telling the history of the IP address in the first place? I dont want to get a dedicated IP and then find myself at the bottom of Google/Bing. I want to be able to pre-empt any problems before they happen, by investigating the IP address in more detail.

Anyone know how to do that?

there are countless paid and free "IP reputation lookup" tools available.
most of the information reported will apply to email spam and malware content servers.
you are probably more concerned with web spam.
if you have a dedicated IP the previous spammy domain(s) will no longer be associated with your IP.
and presumably there wouldn't be any links between those domains and yours.
