full fledged 6 month SEO campaign for 2-3 High Compeitive keywords

will this strategy work?

i have a client asking to get on top of google 10 serp (in fair amount of time) for her new site. she has limited budget and very competitive market and keywords.

She is asking me to run a full fledged 6-month SEO campaign with on page optimization, direcotry submissions, articles writing and submission but for only 2-3 very high competitive keywords and she only agrees to put her country name on the keywords to make it long tail, she doesn't even agree to put city names because she doesn't take local work.

So, Do you guys think:

Q. Doing direcotry submissions, writings many articles and submitting to 100s of article directories for only 2-3 keywords will make her site on top of the google in 6 months? especially when those keywords are highly competitive even after adding country name?

PS: she asks why run a campaign for 10s of keywords why not just concentrate on 2-3 (high competitive high traffic) keywords so building 100s of links for 10 keywords which results in 10 links per keyword, this way we will build 100 links for 2-3 keywords as a result 20-30 links for each keyword. making her site eligible for 1st page ranking for those 2-3 high competitive keywords.

The best way is to focus on high traffic keywords if you have the budget to do that. 6 months would be ok if she is paying you to work full time on just that. A high competitive keyword is a lot of hard work. Your going to have to tell her there is no way she can rank with that type of effort.

Can you expand more on that. She doesn't care what i do article, direcotry, blog comments etc. she just wants me to do everything for those 2-3 high competitive high traffic keywords instead of 10-20 low competitive low traffic keywords. I already explained why she thinks it would be good strategy to work for 2-3 keywords than 10-20.

If i go in general:

Do you think doing all that work for 2-3 keywords is a good strategy?

Is it possible that one can rank for high competitive keywords if huge quantity of quality links to site contains those keywords?

Any type of submission is not for high traffic keywords. Those are for getting long tail terms. The only way to get big keywords is to be an experienced link builder or make an amazing website that people can't stop telling their friends about. I made a post [webmasterworld.com] a few days ago with some more advanced link building techniques.

If it's a brand new site with a limited budget, six months is not enough time to rank well for searches that are seriously competitive.

Tread carefully here; few things are less fun than dealing with a client who has unrealistic expectations.

Even if you could, ranking for a handful of trophy terms is not the wisest goal to set nor the best way to define SEO success.

If you do things right the site would (eventually) gain traffic from the target terms, but it would also gain traffic from searches that you never thought of. It makes a lot more sense to measure SEO progress based on overall growth in organic search traffic, rather than just what the rankings might be for specific search terms.

It makes even more sense to define progress by tracking what new business results from the new traffic. That is the end goal, after all.

You may try to conveyance her to let you optimize the keywords first that have low rate of search on search engine you targeted,if she wouldn't got the point then tell her to expand her budget to get paid links to ranked top...
