I personally think it shouldn't. I mean, search engines want links to be votes from other people for your website, right?
So, are search engines still fooled by links from article directories and count them as votes?
I'd really like an answer from someone who has an actual experience in this.
Thanks,
If you are submitting the article to a load of "me too" directories with no real relevance then the link will have little or no power.
I don't beleive article marketing works unless you publish on super websites with very high pageranks.
If someone has other opinions please prove me wrong, I wish article marketing actually worked!
We cannot completely diminish the fact that Article writing and promotion is of no use in today's search engine market..
As because, If you go on writing some good and informative content which refers your website services as well as is useful to the readers at the same time.. and that too get them approved in Quality article directories..then you might get some good references from those directories..
Simply search for a trial term in Google..and you will see most of the results are been taken up from articles been posted on article directories..
So you never know how a project or a client comes in..there's no harm in writing few articles and getting them approved with right set of keywords...
If we can write 100's of mail weekly for getting few projects or clients, can't we write 1 or 2 articles...I suppose we can..and we definitely should not leave any stone unturned as far as online marketing is concerned..
Hope it helps :)

[edit reason] No specific search terms, please [/edit]
The question was whether or not it would help the article submitter's site to rank.
If you're targeting low-competition terms, then article submission can work. They won't always, and in most cases, won't work at any noticeable degree.
Not to mention if the article is good enough to rank on its own by attracting its own links, wouldn't you have been better off to post that article on your own site?
Whenever we read a good article, we try to figure out the author and the origin of the article, which eventually gives the article and other references (Like author and his website) a good amount of exposure
Moreover an article directory has innumerous no of articles on a particular single topic, On the contrary your website will have only 1 article on the same topic, so who gets the weightage more in the eyes of the search engine, onw which has box full of resources on a set of keywords OR the one which has a single resource for that very keyword :)
A low competition is a low competition word now but it will be a high competition word in the future, so if you keep on writing articles with a mixture of low as well as medium as well as high competition keyword..you have a chance to do well in search engines..
I should grab the chances with both my hands...you never know which one clicks up when :)
Hope it helps :)
