Why do website pages disappear all of a sudden?

Here's a Twighlight Zone query:
A strange issue with only several webpages in a whole website, that disappear one sunny day from google's results. They keep their original PR but wouldn't show at all, even though they used to be a first page result.

Never duplicated nor gave a permission to anyone. Also checked this with copy-reveallers. The strange thing about it is that if this was indeed the case, I should have expect the whole website to vanish from search results. Other website pages show normally.

I've heard from colleagues (and rivals) about this weird situation, but have no clue how to resolve the predicament.

Any suggestions?

I've seen this happen on very large websites in the past with new pages showing up, disappearing and then showing up again some time later despite showing that they have been spidered before and during the "missing" period and gaining the magic PR (meaningless, IMO) green dust.

Not sure why that happened either! However, and I have no idea if this helped or not, we ensured that all pages were linked to from the site map, tried to get some external, useful links to the relevent subsections of the site, waited and they re-appeared.

As to why they went originally? There could be legions of reasons - none of them relevant to your situation (probably). Only the great algo of the big G can really know.

Not a lot of help there, I'm afraid - apart from making sure the pages are well linked to, are not almost duplicates of other pages or in breach of other things likely to trip up the algo.
