Is there a difference in the eyes of the search engines?

What's the best approach (i.e. no search engine ranking penalties) to take for redirecting the additional domains that we bought to our main URL? Thanks.

whoops, I should elaborate. Our DNS provider has offered a web forwarding service for an annual fee. Is this a better option than a 301 redirect set up in our .htaccess file?
