Home page and inner page optimization

Can the ranking of the homepage go down for a keyword if another page of the same website is optimized for the same keyword?

My homepage ranked on the second page for a keyword but when I updated the specific page(inner page) for that keyword, the ranking of the homepage went down while the specific page does not rank at all. Should I make the specific page as it was before so that the homepage ranking becomes like before?

I would suggest Never duplicate content neither optimize with the same keyword as google counts it as duplicate promotion.
