Domain name is about 7 years old and has gone from 40000 pages indexd in google to 485 today. This started back in late October. I spend about six weeks doing SEO and saw good results happening after holiday season, then fell back and has been falling since beginning of April. I some need advice as to what to do. Any help greatly appreciated

It sounds to me like you may have been doing something that Google didn't like.
I spend about six weeks doing SEO

That can mean a great many things to different people. Perhaps if you gave some more specifics...

My original problem was getting the boot from googlebase, because "I'm a drop shipper" but this is only speculation because google never responded to my inquiries in understandable language.with definitive reasons as to what was/is wrong or how to correct whats wrong.

Wait, does this have to do with pages in Google or Googlebase? I think you may want to start over in the appropriate forum. This forum is really for general domain intelligence issues [webmasterworld.com].

My current problem is with google search, I've given up on googlebase- for now. My ssl cert is up for renewal and so I thought I'd think about a solution to this mesh.

When you were doing SEO, what exactly did you do? On site and Off.

Google didn't like something, how are you doing on Yahoo and MSN?

I had never done SEO for the site but always had a fair amount of pages showing up in google. I fixed all title tags, added title attributes, added keywords to by categories, did alot of reading about seo, learned alot, realized alot of what I did naturally when building pages was correct.Backlinks are a serious problem, I have only a Few. Yahoo has 20K pages indexed, MSN about 1070 My sitemap has 50K pages. yesterday after writing this I cleaned out my title attributes for my cats, thinking google may consider them spammy.I'm at my wits end, don't understand whats happening here.

There's SEO and there's too much. The KISS method is the best way to go as in Keep It Simple, Sir. Look for duplicate content as that is the most frequent problem. Also realize that Google does change their algos without rhyme or reason. Just run through the topics at WW to see all those other folks in the same boat. Nobody has a real answer, though there is a lot of speculation as to why....

You need to take a step back, and think about what the viewer would want. Sometimes people get so tied in about what the search engines want to see that you forget your actual audience is people. Once you do that you may find a huge error.

Another thing is make sure that your title is around 80 characters. This keeps it search engine friendly. A common mistake people make is they hear "put keywords in the title tag" and boom they have 10000 keywords one after another.

I think once you do that you should see some better results.
