What's better (SEO-wise) .co.nr or real domains?

Guys,

At the risk of sounding cheap, I'm wondering if there's any reason (SEO-wise) not to have URLs like www.website.co.nr (free) vs having real domains (www.website.com)

Does SEs penalize such domains/websites? Any experience/advice to share?

Thanks,
AG.

My experience of .au domains in Google is that within the Webmaster Tools you can *only* geotarget for the .au market - you cannot tell Google it is for any other market.
I assume other CCTLDs are the same.
(and I have no idea what .nr is)

leadegroot is correct, using a 2 letter/country domain will mean your ranking is tied to that country and it will be very hard to get rankings outside of that country.

Now if the country domain is the only country you want to use, then that is not a problem, you then have the problem of a possible negative network.

Since the domain you get the IP is not controlled by you, it might mean a loss of traffic due to being banned in China, getting banned IP from spammer using the same IP and while rare being involved in a penalty being applied to the complete domain, for example if 99% of the names are used for phishing, #*$! or other things your website could be collateral damage.
