we are about to submit a number of articles with back links to our site.
I have recently read that its also a good idea to put the same article on the main site. Is this correct? If so, would it not cause any duplice content problems?

if you are submitting the same article on various sites it will not create a duplicate content problem but the article which first gets indexed will only be shown in the Google backlinks results.
