Long text articles and SEO: multiple pages and duplicate content

better to use different page titles to avoid perceived duplicate content?

Many of our long articles are broken into over 3 pages to improve readability.

I don't want to game the system but is it better from an SEO perspective to give each page a slightly different title tag just to reduce risk of being perceived by search engines as duplicate content?

Break your article up into logical themed pages. Then use an appropriate title to describe each unique page. I've seen a variety of practices in this area. I go for the uniqueness of each page and therefore will make sure everything is different. And then I'll use the

elements to bring them all together. ;)

Treat each page as a chapter don't just break the pages up at arbitrary points. Write the article with multiple pages in mind. Give each page a unique title and description. Assign each page targeted keywords and work them into the article and use <h1> and <h2> tags. If you refer to something mentioned on a previous page link to it like wikipedia does.
