I have a website, e.g., example.com. My blog is at example.com/widgetsales.

I have been giving out the widgetsales.com name URL as my blog url (and it is a forwarded 301 Permanent) to example.com/widgetsales.

Question - Am I killing my link building SEO if people are just putting widgetsales.com on their websites (instead of a direct link to example.com/widgetsales)?

If you have correctly set up the 301, the value of the links should pass over to the final page.
(Caveat: most of the time - there are instances where the engines pass no value, eg you have 300 domains all 301ing, which are not on topic and you bought them for the link value)
