Where does seo come into play when it comes to images on a website? My site has several image galleries. When I am searching for keywords for my site and images, I find that some of the major search engines list me on page one in a web search but when I do an image search I cannot find any of my images. Vise vera...on three search engines my image/images were listed on the first page, two even the first image, but in the web search I could not even find my website listed in the first 10 pages. Interesting....So I guess my question is, how do I use seo for my many images and how important is accomodating the image search verses the web search?.

General Image Search SEO Tips
  • Add unique keywords to your image file names. Don't spam it though.

  • Proximity of keywords to images is useful.

  • Large images seem to do well.

  • Use the alt attribute on your images.
    Example: <IMG src="http://www.example.com/images/yoko-ono/yoko-laughing.jpg" alt="Yoko Ono smiling.">

  • Use the title attribute on links to your images
    Example: <A href="http://www.example.com/yoko-ono.jpg" title="Yoko Ono smiling">Yoko Ono smiling</A>

Yahoo Image Search
Yahoo makes it easy by letting you specify an RSS feed. See here:
[search.yahoo.com...]
[search.yahoo.com...]

I'll also reinforce that in addition to alt attributes (and preferably an absolute URI), IMHO it is a very good idea to specify height and width. Think about it. :)

Some people also argue that image title matters but I don't see it.

Text around the image OTOH...

Some people also argue that image title matters but I don't see it.

For image LINKS, I use alts as anchor and titles to introduce the image. Thats not per-spec, but works for me.

I've always used 'alt' but never 'titles'. Do they perform like 'alt'? I've heard something about 'titles' working like alt in FF and other browsers. If so, then I would want to use both, huh.

Technically you're supposed to use titles on the link to an image. If the image is being displayed within the web page then the proper attribute to use is the Alt attribute.
