Ive a competitor and their site ranks well to say teh least, many of the pages arent text based but graphic, no hidden text etc.
I suspect its due to cast numbers of back links, would that be correct ?

Number and quality of backlinks would be the most likely reason, yes. Strong trust and authority can do a lot for a site. That said, they are vulnerable, because if their backlink profile can be replicated by a site with better on-page content, then they are suddenly at a disadvantage. ;-)
