Link Building for a site that doesn't exist yet

Help! Link building for a domain before the actual site is live.

I am creating a sub website from the main website for one of my client's products. I have purchased the domain for the new site, but would like to start link building for the domain before the site is actually live.

I have two options.

1) Create a landing page about the product on the new domain until the site goes live.
2) Place a 301 redirect on the new domain to point to the product section on the main site, and then remove the 301 redirect when the new site goes live.

From an SEO point of view, which would be the best option? My client would like to see loads of traffic coming to the site once it is live, hence why I would like to start link building for the domain in advance in order to give the site a head start in ranking well in the search engines.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Littlekelz

since 301 means Moved Permanently and 302 implies temporary redirection i would suggest a 302 instead and give the correct signal to the SE.
