Googlebot will follow and index your page unless you specify not to do so. So basically using this tag to tell Google to index your site is no longer necessary. It certaily won't hurt you, but probably won't help either.

Title and Meta Description tags are the only ones worth implementing these days.

Google is after content and is likely to index your page (provided there are no issues) regardless of your request or not. Even if you Disallow in robots.txt they still could index your page(s).

FWIW I prefer to minimize code bloat and eliminate extraneous elements.
