The script I will use allows me to put each item in different categories and subcategories and to "print" the categories in the url:
Example:
a computer shop named Hardwareshop located in the south of the country.
Urls generated:
www.mysite.com/south-shops/hardwareshop.htm
www.mysiste.com/computers-shops/hardwareshop.htm
This is pretty good for my users as they are able to find the shop with both the "south shops" and "computer shop" search. I used this system on another site and google indexed it pretty well, it simply ignored one of the two identical pages.
This system of course generates duplicate pages, my question is: how much should I worry?
An alternative would be to strip the category from the url:
www.myshop.com/hardwareshop.htm but I would lose seo benefits from the url.
What do you think is the best solution?
Should I really worry about creating duplicate content on a same site?
thanks for your suggestions
In my opinion it would be fine if you keep the url as www.myshop.com/hardwareshop.htm and include the keywords "computer shops" and "south shops" in the title of the specific webpage, in the meta description tag and in the general text(within the body tags)of the webpage.
There is nothing called duplicate content penalty. Google will just pick one of the pages and omit the other one. Thats it. It won't harm your rankings.
