website traffic by forum postings

how effective are forum postings?

I am looking for more traffic to my Web site. Would it be a good idea to post my link to various forums in industry chat sections to increase my traffic?

How much does forum posting contribute towards increasing the incoming traffic?

Forum posting can increase your traffic,infact it can do that only.I maximum forums you will find the outbound links are no followed,so except traffic you will not get anything out of those links.

Recently I have added my website's link in my signature.I am posting genuine comments(and helpful answers wherever possible)in various sections of forums. And I am not just confined to the section related to my website.I participate in any section which I am interested in or have some knowledge about.

My question is: Do you consider it a good and useful policy? (Apart from cases where the forum rules do not allow links in signatures; and also ruling out the possilbility of google not indexing the link in sig as I am just concerned with the traffic and not SE rank...)

The question is how the off-topic posting is going to help your site at all. You are probably gonna get some extra visitors, but they will not mean much. It is better to attract visitors that are interested in the subject of your site.
