Why are the competition considered to be the ones in " ( "widget keyword" ) when most of these sites dont even make it to the top 10 in the first place.

Once you search without the " " , you see totally different sites in the top ten.

I ask because it just doesn't make since that I try and get in the top ten asked on sites that aren't even there themselves. Can anyone answer?

If I understand what you are asking, the use of "" in a search bar generates different results when used and then removed.

If I type in "internet marketing", I will get one set of results.

But if I type in internet marketing, I will get a different set of results.

The "internet marketing" is a SQL query for exact match (i.e anything that contains the phrase - internet marketing.

The other, will just return results that have eithor internet or marketing or both.

Exactly, that is all you are doing anyway is "constraining" the search to an exact match .... stating that those set of words must be together.

A better way to find the true competition is the allinanchor:

allinanchor:keyword phrase

That will tell you the top sites that use that phrase as incoming link text. That is good info.
