Shorter url = higher ranking?

Hi,

What do you guys think...Is a shorter url better for the SEO-ranking? Or doesn't it matter?

Example long url: www.example.com/categorie/subcat/subsubcat/brand/product-id/ (this can become very long, with long subcat en subsubcat names)

Example short url: www.example.com/subsubcat/brand/product-id.hmtl

If yes, should I make a 301 redirect of all my pages or is that suicide for my website?

My understanding had been that the more subfolders a file is buried in, the least likely it is to get indexed. I don't have a point of reference myself, as I never use subfolders for html or php files, I always keep them in the root folder.

You'll have to get another person's feedback on the redirects, but I wouldn't encourage anyone to place a file six subfolders deep if it could be avoided. For what it's worth, some design firms won't exchange links with another site if you have to jump two or three levels to get to their links page.
